New this week: Tierra Whack, Duckwrth, Tash Sultana, Papadosio, Grand Corps Malade, Raül Refree & more
It’s been a busy week, but never fear! Unique music shall grace your ears
This week, the brand-new, rebuilt-from-scratch Crash premium job hunting app went live, so I’ve had less time to document my musical findings.
BUT—fear not, we still have a few excellent new artists joining the Eclectic Summer 2020 playlist which you can listen & subscribe to on Spotify and YouTube:
New this week
We start today with a some groovy, lighthearted tracks:
Tierra Whack pokes fun at only children
Only childs? Only-children? Even I, the eternal grammarist, am stumped!
Anywy, I hope these spacey vibes get you nodding along. I find the singing style and the hook just deliciously unique and ear-catching. Also, I was an only child until I was 11 years old—hi Grace!—and I was hella stingy, so it’s something I relate to.
The music video, though? I have no idea… 😂 see for yourself:

Duckwrth crushes on a couple ladies
This one is going to get stuck in your head. 😅 *crush*
It’s also a fun story, very relatable to those of us who crush easily. *crush*
The ending begs the question: is it really so bad to have crushes? If you ask me, love is positive-sum. There’s plenty to go around.
These next couple pieces mix lightheartedness with melancholy, leading us into the rest of the new playlist adds.
Tash Sultana is back with two singles
Kick back and relax in classic Tash style with two singles she’s released so far this year. “Pretty Lady” is about making moments last, and “Greed” seems like a gentle F-you to the game:
They only give a shit when you make it big /
Turn their back when you make a hit /
Looking forward to this album release! I’ll cover it when I see it.
Space rock underground: Papadosio’s Agarikon
Have you heard of this band? Their discography goes back to 2007 and I can’t believe I’d never come across them. So far, much of their music is exquisitely progressive and eclectic. From their website:
Papadosio strives to create music that is strangely familiar, and calls all walks of humanity to bask in a unique experience celebrating the one constant in an ever changing world: music.
This dark, electronic, spacey mind-bender of a track is their latest single. It’s got a catchy 8-note riff that repeats a few times throughout, and has been stuck in my head ever since. 😋
Excited to hear the full album, Microdosio! Plus, that pixel art cover is rad. I used to make pixel art like that. Clearly, these guys are fans of little big details. I have no idea what it is, but look what’s at the top of their homepage HTML 😂
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Grand Corps Malade & Camille Lellouche s’aiment quand meme
You don’t need to understand the lyrics to feel the emotion and power in Mais je t’aime (“But, I love you”). The piano, the deep background sounds, Camille’s rich, Adele-like voice, and Grand Corps Malade’s signature baritone narratives all mixed together are sure to give you goosebumps:
Still, if you want to understand the lyrics, it’s a deep song about love, what we first think it is, and all its nuances we slowly discover along the way.
A great pick for my French-speaking parents, friends, and wife. 😀
Lina & Raül Refree honor “the woman who was yours”
A Mulher que já foi tua — the woman who was yours — is track #3 on the new, self-titled collaboration Lina_Raül Referee. It’s a beautifully simple melody that I can’t understand, but appreciate in its entirety.
I’ve featured Portuguese-language songs before and I just love the language so much. H/T to FIP Radio for finding this one.
Let me tell you, when I bookmarked it on FIP, the track was titled “Sta Luzia” and I tried searching everywhere online to no avail. Finally, I hunted down the album on Spotify, and started listening from the beginning. They must have renamed the track at some point between the pre-release to radio stations and the official release.
Enjoy this soft, quiet, deliciously simple melody:
ps - Raül Refree collaborated with Lee Ranaldo on a whole other album this year, and it’s certified Weird In The Best Possible Ways Music™. 😀 Highly recommend it: Names of North End Women.
That’s all she wrote this week! Hope you enjoy these discoveries, and let me know what’s new in your ears these days—just hit reply. I’d love to hear from you.
Thanks for listening,
